Paul B. Arenas

Senior Attorney / Long Beach

Professional Background

Paul is a civil litigator with 27 years’ experience, with a practice focused on maritime and transportation law, as well as defense of misclassification suits (individual and class action); Labor Commissioner and Employment Development Department audits and labor and employment generally. Mr. Arenas has represented insurance and cargo interests, including, but not limited to, freight forwarders, intermodal and long-haul trucking, logistics providers, warehousemen, cargo handlers and airlines, vessel and other interests and has provided advice on marine insurance coverage issues.

He has represented numerous companies in the Final Mile delivery sector and been a featured speaker at numerous industry events.

Mr. Arenas is experienced in trial, arbitration, mediation and administrative proceedings. He also has led the purchase/acquisition of intermodal and interstate trucking companies. He has argued twice before the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals in matters involving the Warsaw and Montreal Convention on International Air Carriage.

Paul is an exceptionally organized and strategic litigator. His modest but firm persona does extremely well in court. Recent victories include a complete defense win after three weeks of arbitration for a client that was sued for $5M; securing a $1.1 million award on Client’s counterclaim, and a $57,000 sanction award imposed personally against plaintiff’s principals and their lawyer - - all of which were 100% paid within 30 days on the threat of additional sanctions. In another victory for a 450-tractor motor carrier, he defeated seven figure detention claims brought by an ocean carrier against his client (affirmed by the 9th Circuit). The case will now go to trial on Client’s $1,100,000 + claim vs. ocean carrier.

Paul is a leader of the Firm’s misclassification team which is centered on the transportation and logistics industry. He’s been a key part of teams that have repeatedly dismantled class actions with targeted approaches such as attacks on the sufficiency of class representatives and compelling individual arbitration.

Paul is a member of the State Bar of California; the Maritime Law Association of the United States, and the Transportation Lawyers Association and affiliated counsel to the Harbor Trucking Associations of Los Angeles/Long Beach and Oakland, as well as for the Courier Logistics & Delivery Association of the United States. He is also a member of the Society for Human Resource Management.

Paul B. Arenas received his Juris Doctor from the University of the Pacific, McGeorge School of Law. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Stanford University.
