Geoffrey W. Gill

Of Counsel / Long Beach

Professional Background

Geoff began his maritime career as a 16 year old "jungmann" (deck boy) on the Norwegian freighter Concordia Viking, concluding as Second Officer in container ships in world-wide services.

As a civil litigator with more than 35 years of experience in predominantly the maritime, logistics and insurance sectors, he is admitted to practice law in New York, Florida (inactive) and California, and successfully has argued cases before United States Courts of Appeals for the Second, Ninth and Eleventh Circuits as well as State Courts of Appeals. Many of Geoff’s trial court decisions and appellate court opinions have either expanded existing legal grounds or overturned precedent, and are cited in practitioner as well as academic legal treatises. He has served as a federal arbitrator appointed out of the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York. Since 1996 Geoff has twice revised and annually supplemented the multi-volume West's Admiralty Federal Forms and commentary set and has authored the internationally esteemed Maritime Error Management, as well as numerous articles and presentations discussing legal and operational aspects of maritime error.

Geoff has become an important contributor to the Firm’s Transportation Sector practice and has assisted with a variety of matters including drafting bills of lading and warehousing storage contracts and litigating misclassification cases.

Geoff is an active coach of local high school mock trial teams and proctor in the Los Angeles County Superior Court "Teen Court" program. For more than 25 years he has volunteered with the Los Angeles Maritime Institute, operator of traditional sailing vessels locally and off-shore for the benefit of under served youth and the instruction of STEM courses.

Geoff is a member of the New York State Bar, State Bar of Florida, State Bar of California and the Long Beach Bar Association.

Geoff received his Juris Doctor from Fordham University School of Law, New York City and his Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Transportation from the United States Merchant Marine Academy, Kings Point, NY.
